let us be

could you not please
strip down
to your vest
your psychedelic shorts
we would not mind
if you rocked the look
but as things stand
you are miles away
from rocking anything

could you not please
stroll around
bottle in hand
your swagger
just naked and bare
your bravado
a delusion
just plain hot air

and what’s with the
riding our beaches
with tops down
those ugly jeep
and what your drunken self
believes is music
its just noise, brother

you should listen
to the speakers we have
around which we build our homes
where Remo croons
Alfred serenades
where Lorna soars
and Kishori weaves a spell

Photo by vinay kumar on Unsplash

yeah, sure
if you do want to
call this home
no one will mind
a better one
no one can find
could you not please
get your luggage
abandon it where you came from
and start afresh
with and not against us

we’ve got the sea
we’ve got the sun
we are uber relaxed
football, feni and a lot of fun
could you just not please
insist to convert this into
something you anyway
wanted to escape from
what’s the point really

its just that we love our land dearly
like you love yours
so come as you are
and mingle gently
softer the voice
will help you aplenty
you will discover peace
and question the roads
being made in your name
the desolation
being created in your name

those villas
you buy or rent
are built
on the graves of
our groves
our fields
our friends
and family

their cries
may just haunt you
forever
